Casey School Crossing Program

School crossing with students

The importance of supervisors

The City of Casey employs approximately 200 School Crossing Supervisors who play a vital role in helping to keep pedestrians and motorists safe around school zones.

Some fast facts

  • The School Crossing Program operates under procedures established by the Department of Transport and Planning, with funding jointly provided by local Councils. The program has been serving the local community since 1975.

  • Each day, approximately 30,000 students utilise school crossings within the City of Casey, amounting to nearly 6 million student crossings annually.

  • Currently, there are over 165 designated school crossing sites servicing more than 80 schools across Casey. These crossings are regularly reviewed to ensure they align with pedestrian needs and funding considerations.

  • School Crossing Supervisors are professionally trained to manage the needs of both pedestrians and motorists, ensuring optimal safety and efficient traffic flow around school zones. They perform their duties in all weather conditions, contributing significantly to the safety of students during peak drop-off and pick-up times.

Helpful reminders for working together

Getting children to school safely is everyone’s job! Our school crossing supervisors do a fantastic job, but they can’t do it alone. We've compiled a list of helpful reminders below.

Also, remember to respect School Crossing Supervisors. They’re trained to support your children’s safety.

Pedestrians

  • Always stand behind the yellow/white line until the Supervisor has blown their whistle twice.
  • Do not ride bikes or scooters across the crossing, bounce balls or run. Walk promptly and safely.
  • All pedestrians should cross at the crossing when the flags are displayed.

Motorists

  • Do not stop your vehicle within the 'No Stopping' area, as this inhibits visibility for both vehicles on the road and the School Crossing Supervisor.
  • If the school crossing flags are displayed, you must give way.
  • Slow down around school crossings and prepare to stop.
  • Obey parking restrictions to avoid infringements.
  • Remain stopped until all pedestrians have safely crossed and the School Crossing Supervisor has left the roadway.
  • Don’t let your children get in or out of your vehicle when stopped waiting at a school crossing.

Hours of operation

School Crossing Supervisors work Monday to Friday during the school term, within the School Zone hours of:

  • 8.00 am - 9.30 am
  • 2.30 pm - 4.00 pm.

Operational times for each school crossing are customised to the specific needs of the school community. Most crossings operate for 1.5 hours per day, which may be evenly split into 45 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the afternoon, or adjusted to reflect peak pedestrian activity and school-specific requirements.
