Illegal parking means parking a vehicle where it's not permitted, violating road rules and causing potential hazards or disruptions
What constitutes illegal parking?
- Disobeying parking signs and markings, parking on yellow lines, in no-parking zones, or designated areas without permits.
- Parking in the wrong direction or on the wrong side of the road.
- Parking in restricted areas, including loading zones, bus stops, and emergency access points.
- Overstaying time limits in ticketed parking.
- Parking on nature strips (unless permitted).
- Parking within certain distances of intersections.
- Parking with less than three meters of clear road left for other traffic.
Once illegal parking is reported, we'll start investigations within five working days. Fines may be issued.
Abandoned vehicles
An abandoned car is a vehicle left on public property, such as a road or council land, for a prolonged period without being moved or used.
Once reported
Unregistered abandoned vehicles
- A Local Laws Officer will inspect the vehicle within 10 working days.
- The vehicle will be stickered, and the owner will have 7 days to remove the vehicle.
- After 7 days, the car will be towed to a Nationwide lot.
- The vehicle will be sold/disposed of if it is not collected in 14 days.
Registered abandoned vehicles
- A Local Laws Officer will inspect the vehicle within 10 working days.
- Council will monitor the vehicle for 60 days.
- If unmoved in 60 days, the vehicle will be stickered and the owner will have seven days to remove the vehicle.
- After 7 days, the car will be towed to a Nationwide lot.
- The vehicle will be sold/disposed of if it is not collected in 14 days.
You can confirm a vehicle's registration status on the VicRoads website. This will also show if the vehicle was stolen.
Reports we cannot investigate
Abandoned vehicles in any of the following locations must be reported to the relevant authorities:
- VicRoads managed roads. Contact VicRoads.
- Private property and shopping centre car parks. Contact the property owner.
- Dumped in water. Contact the Department of Environment, Water and Planning.
- Stolen. Contact the Victoria Police.
Impounded vehicles
All vehicles are towed by Nationwide Towing & Transport.
Vehicles can be retrieved from 221 Browns Road, Noble Park North, VIC 3174.
If you do not claim your vehicle within 14 days of it being impounded, it (and anything attached to it) will be disposed of.
