Other pests

Snakes

If you see a snake, you should leave it alone. Snakes will mostly move on if they are not disturbed or agitated. It is illegal to harm a snake, as per the Wildlife Act 1975.

The Department of Energy, Environment, and Climate Action (DEECA) has more information on snakes and other reptiles.

Report a snake on Council land

If you see a snake on Council land, you can report it to us. You must be prepared to stay and watch the snake if you make a report. This is because the snake may disappear by the time we get someone to come and catch it.

To make a report, please contact us.

We do not deal with snakes on private land. If you see a snake on your property, you should call a snake catcher.

Possums

If you are having problems with possums, you can hire a professional to help remove them. Possums are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. You cannot harm or capture them without a proper trap.

DEECA has more information about possums.

Rabbits

In Victoria, feral or wild populations of European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are declared as established pest animals under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 (CALP Act).

Rabbit control

Under the CALP Act all landowners have a responsibility to take all reasonable steps to prevent the spread of – and as far as possible eradicate – established pest animals from their land.

Agriculture Victoria is responsible for overseeing and enforcing rabbit control under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994.

The City of Casey is responsible for controlling rabbits on Council owned and managed land.

What council are doing

Council supports an integrated approach to controlling rabbits and works with stakeholders including statutory authorities and other landowners to reduce rabbit numbers.

Council conducts targeted pest control actions to reduce the impacts of rabbits on Council managed land across the City of Casey. The programs combine various control methods to reduce rabbit numbers including warren fumigation, rabbit-proof fencing, and harbor removal.
