The City of Casey is replacing approximately 8,152 of its mercury vapour decorative street lights to LEDs.
The project needs to be undertaken due to the inability to source mercury vapour lamps as a result of banning these products from being imported into Australia from 2022.
The replacement program is scheduled to occur between April 2024 and June 2026 and is expected to cost around $9M over the 3 years.
When completed, the project will:
- reduce street light energy use by over 80%
- reduce greenhouse emissions and respond to climate control
- reduce the ongoing operating and maintenance costs of the street lights
- improve the quality and amenity of street lighting at night
- improve compliance with Australian Standards in terms of safety and lighting levels.
The new LED lights will:
- have a greater uniformity of light along the street
- provide better colour rendering and visibility
- maintain a more consistent light output over time
- require less maintenance.
The new street lights will be installed by the appointed contractor, Omexom who will be managed by Ironbark on behalf of the City of Casey.
The chosen replacement LED lights have been approved for use by both distribution businesses Ausnet and United Energy.
Once removed, the installation contractor will dispose of the old lights through recycling methods where 98% of the fitting will be recycled.
