Child Friendly Cities and Communities Charter

Child Friendly City

About

Child Friendly Cities is a global initiative that supports the rights of every child to grow up in an environment where:

  • they feel safe and secure
  • their voices are heard
  • they can play, learn and grow.

Children and young people have an important role in shaping our community, and our goal is for them to be active participants in projects and initiatives that affect them.

The Charter provides guidance around responding to the needs of children and young people by:

  • Ensuring organisations are Child Safe and Child Friendly.
  • Improving the effectiveness and responsiveness of initiatives that support children and young people to participate in civic life.
  • Amplifying the voice of children and young people in decision-making forums.
  • Recognising the importance of children and young people in the community.

Council's commitment

The City of Casey has the largest youth population in Victoria, and we are proud to be a Child Friendly City – endorsing the Victorian Child Friendly Cities and Communities Charter

This means that we are committed to:

  • Acting in the best interests of children and young people in our community.
  • Empowering children and young people to share their opinions and include them in decisions that affect them.
  • Ensure equity for children and young people in our community based on their needs.

How the City of Casey engages and empowers children and young people:

  • Asking for their opinions on decisions we make that will impact them.
  • Conducting engagement initiatives, such as the Youth Summit and Youth Advisory Group.
  • Writing policies and processes that support the best interests of children and young people, and keep them safe.
  • Developing tools and resources to help our staff to engage children and young people.
